In October 2010 the JISC Monitoring Unit published an analysis of JANET traffic against institution income and other statistics to evaluate the suitability of income as a base for calculating an institution’s network charge. A table showing total JANET traffic for the 2008/09 academic year was published as part of this work (Table 1).
As a follow-up to that report HEFCE requested a brief update, investigaing the research use of JANET. The Monitoring Unit did those calculations based on the AY2010/11 use of the network and the results are presented in Table 1 below.
| Institutions | Number | Traffic(GB) | %total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Russell Group/1994 Group | 39 | 78,313,492 | 50% |
| Other HE | 125 | 53,973,571 | 35% |
| Higher Education | 164 | 132,287,062 | 85% |
| Further Education | 486 | 10,152,614 | 7% |
| Research Council | 32 | 12,350,509 | 8% |
| Others | 123 | 1,326,954 | 1% |
| Total AY 2010/11 | 805 | 156,117,139 |
It should be noted that some fairly significant research use of JANET is not counted in the above. Large amounts of particle physics data, for example, the ATLAS project are transported over Lightpaths, which JANET(UK) cannot report.
