JISC Services Portfolio Review 2011

JISC supports the UK further and higher education (FE and HE) sectors by providing the expertise, independent advice, guidance and resources to promote the effective and innovative use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The JISC Services Portfolio is a key element of this provision.

Through its Portfolio, JISC commissions a range of high-quality Advisory, Content and Infrastructure services from a number of JISC-funded service providers, currently running at around 60 services delivered by 30 providers, some of whom operate a single service and others providing an umbrella for a number of services.

In a fast changing technology and funding environment it is important to regularly review these services, to ensure they reflect JISC's strategy, meet the needs of users, deliver value for money and quality products and to test their sustainability for the future.

The Services Portfolio Review is a process through which JISC reviews its entire portfolio of services. It occurs on an annual basis in May each year with decisions being made by the Chairs committee before being passed for consideration and approval by the Sub-committees and Board. The process is ongoing, iterative and improving to ensure it accurately reviews the services against the criteria that are appropriate in light of any changes to the strategic demands and funding position of JISC. (In 2012 the initial review will be conducted by the JISC Transition Group, with their recommendations being endorsed by the JISC Board and Shadow Board.)

The JISC Monitoring Unit produced a series of Datasheets for JISC and the Chairs committee for the 2011 Services Portfolio Review. These Datasheets provide a snapshot of costs, usage levels (including projected use for the next three years where possible), market penetration and perceived value within the user community.

The Datasheets reflect the situation as of 31 January 2011.
