From the start of AY2009/10 we have changed the format of our quarterly reports.
Historically our reports have been split into “infrastructure”, “content” and “authentication” documents. This split was based on the underlying funding sub-committee structure.
Following the JISC sub-committee re-structure in 2009 all of the monitored services are now overseen by the JISC Infrastructure and Resources (JIR) sub-committee. Following detailed conversation with the JISC Service Relationship Management Team the quarterly reports have been redesigned to act as a unified and internally consistent document.
The primary audience for our reports is the JISC Service Relationship Management Team. We no longer send reports to JISC sub-committees for their deliberation but provide the background information the JISC Executive require to manage service provider relationships and brief sub-committees (primarily JIR).
With this new primary audience in mind we have revised the format of our reports quite dramatically.
In old reports we frequently found ourselves writing entire sentences (or sometimes even paragraphs) around the need to present one or two numbers. This was appropriate when committee members, who may not be overly familiar with the operation of individual services within the portfolio, were reading our reports but is less appropriate when members of the Executive need to quickly build a picture of what is going on.
Where services are operating within defined service levels we now generally present numbers in tabular form.
Where there are problems (or particularly notable events) in the quarter under examination we aim to include appropriate commentary within the report. Such comments are also distilled to the introductory section for each service provider.
Within the report for each service you will now find data on both performance (e.g. availability and response times) and service trend (e.g. usage), with up to three years of historical data.
As a further aid to the JISC Executive we have developed a “quickview” report, showing the current performance of all services within the portfolio.
The quickview shows month-to-month performance to highlight when incidents have occurred but is primarily to be used to view performance against the 12-month service level.
Rather than publishing three separate reports a single unified quarterly report will appear on the web site.
The executive summary will outline particularly notable points, across the entire portfolio, for the quarter. We will make the individual sub-sections of the report available to download (as PDFs) to enable readers to load only those reports in which they have an interest. For each service provider both the main report and management quickview will be available.
